It was Frankenstein vs. Dracula at the annual budget meeting; Frankenstein won
Day One: Halloween
By Jim Lundstrom
Unless you are a political junkie, county board meetings generally are not spectator sport, but you expect a good turnout when it comes to the most important county meeting of the year – the annual budget talks, when elected officials etch in stone how they will spend your hard-earned tax dollars for the coming year.
The Calumet County Board's annual budget meeting opened the morning of Oct. 31 to a packed house in the basement of the Calumet County Courthouse. The gallery was crowded on this gloomy Halloween for the main item in the 2012 budget – to build or not to build a new Highway Department facility.
The question took up most of the day, and it turned out to be so fitting that it fell on Halloween because it got a little bit scary and more than a few creatures raised their ugly heads.
But most symbolic of all, the board drove a stake through the heart of the constantly reviving concept of a new highway building and instead embraced a Frankenstein solution – add new parts to the old body to make it live again!
