The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has announced that the Wisconsin signup for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) will be Jan. 19 through Feb. 19, 2010 for 2010 funding. Chris Miller, District Conservationist for NRCS in Chilton, said there are a number of new practices and priorities available this year. EQIP is the primary program available to provide assistance with farmland conservation practices. “This year, a number of exciting new practices will be offered, in addition to the more than 50 other practices that have been eligible in the past,” said Chris. “EQIP offers flat-rate payments based on a schedule for each particular practice, so farmers know up-front what the payment will be.” All eligible applications received by February 19, 2010, will be evaluated and ranked for funding. Farmers can sign up at the NRCS office in USDA Service Centers statewide. Some example practices that may be applicable in Calumet County (just to name a few) would be: Nutrient Management Plans, Pest Management Plans, Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plans, Waste Storage, Manure Transfer Systems, Grassed Waterways, and Barnyard related practices, such as: Roof Runoff Structures, Heavy Use Area Protection, and Vegetated Treatment Strips. The backlog of applications for EQIP was significantly reduced in last year's EQIP sign-up, creating opportunities for new applicants. A number of steps must be completed in advance for an application to be eligible. Please visit the Wisconsin NRCS web site at www.wi.nrcs.usda.gov under EQIP for more details. For more information, see www.wi.nrcs.usda.gov under Programs, or contact the NRCS office at the USDA Service Center in Chilton at 920/849-1444 or stop in at 206 Court Street, Chilton, WI. |
