Miss Snowflake, the spokesperson of the Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs spoke with the Calumet County Sno-Trails snowmobiling club last Tuesday about the importance of getting more people involved in the sport. “Encourage the local youth to become more involved in the club,” Miss Snowflake Clarissa Justmann said to the group. “There are lots of kids taking the safety classes, but parent involvement is not always there. There are kids taking the classes, but they don’t continue riding.” Youth involvement in the Calumet County club is not that great, board members said, but they are working on ways to increase their activity in the group. Secretary Lisa Herrick said 47 riders attended the safety training on December 11 and 12, 2009. Justmann, a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay majoring in Environmental Science, also spoke about some of her involvement as the public relations person for the Wisconsin snowmobile clubs association. As part of her job, Justmann has attended parades and snowmobiling events including races in Milwaukee, Tomahawk and Eagle River. She will be attending events in Kiel, Menasha and Three Lakes, Wis. Justmann is sponsored by her local club, Theresa Pioneers Snowmobile Club from Dodge County. She became Miss Snowflake through a series of interviews at the local and county levels before applying to the statewide position. She participated in the AWSC workshop recently where she learned more about how the clubs work with local government officials and land owners. “Without these clubs, we wouldn’t have any trails,” Justmann said. “It’s amazing how much work everyone puts in.” More information about the AWSC and Miss Snowflake can be found online at www.awsc.org or by searching for “AWSC Miss Snowflake” on www.facebook.com.
