The ninth annual Calumet Medical Center Progressive Agriculture Safety Day was held on Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at the Calumet County Fairgrounds. Local children ages 8-12 learned about everything from farm equipment safety to learning how to identify a bully.
Agricultural Safety Day was held at the Calumet County Fairgrounds on July 27. Demonstrations were performed at 10 different stations throughout the grounds with speakers who helped teach the kids at each one. Topics demonstrated and discussed at the event were: farm equipment safety, farm animal awareness, farm injuries, chemical awareness, water safety, severe weather awareness, firearms safety, household electricity, bullying, and hidden hazards/flowing grain. Karin Wille, Community Relations Coordinator for Calumet Medical Center, talked about how important it is for kids to learn about how these things even at a young age. "We don't condone kids who are this young operating this equipment," Wille said. "But we know they are going to be actively involved on the farm and at least they will know how to be safe if we teach them." |
