Steve Thiry began his post as Chilton Public Library Director on August 23rd. He comes to Chilton with a well rounded background including his most recent position as a Library Assistant at the Kiel Public Library. Thiry graduated from the University of Wisconsin Green Bay in 1999 and later received a Secondary Teaching Certification from Silver Lake College. He taught at Alternative High Schools in Milwaukee, Plymouth and Green Bay. While at the Kiel Public Library, Thiry has been pursuing his Masters Degree in Information Science. "I have diverse interests so this position lends itself well for me," said Thiry. With just a few days on the job he has already begun to visualize and take initial steps toward his goals. "Ultimately my mission is to bring programs into the library that reflects the interests of the community."
Thiry has initiated conversations with community leaders on teen and young adult programming. He is also interested in looking at more options for children and adults. "Collection development and integration of technology for staff and the public is a focus of mine. The goal is really to bring more people into the library," said Thiry. Steve's personal interests include running, bicycling, down hill skiing, back packing and camping. His enthusiasm for exercise began in 2004 when he initiated cycling for stress relief. He stuck with an exercise regime and has lost a considerable amount of weight as a result. Along with his wife Heather, a Kiel Public School employee, he has competed in triathlons and most recently the 100 mile Escarpment Bike Tour at Ledgeview. His young children have also joined them in their pursuits. "I would love to bring the idea of integrating a healthy body and mind into the library setting and over time plan to develop the idea." Most importantly, Thiry expresses, "As I begin my time at Chilton Public Library, it's quickly become apparent to me that Kathy Garton was passionate about inspiring and enriching the lives of people in the community through her generosity, amazing perspective and love for the library. I am grateful for her influence and appreciate that she guided so many people to discovering all the resources that the library has to offer." The Thiry's reside in Kiel with their three children – Harrison age 9, Megan age 7, and Joshua age 4. |
