Thousands expected for the Feast of the Assumption of Mary

GREEN BAY -- Nearly 3,000 Catholics are expected to converge in Brown County for the annual spiritual pilgrimage for the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The special outdoor Mass and rosary procession (a form of meditative prayer) will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, at the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help in Robinsonville (near Champion), which is northeast of Green Bay. Bishop Robert J. Banks of the Diocese of Green Bay will be the celebrant at this annual event. Participants are asked to bring their own lawn chairs.
The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary commemorates the taking into heaven of Mary's soul and body at the end of her life. The feast is one of the oldest and most solemn Marian feasts, and dates back to at least the seventh century when its celebration was already established in Jerusalem and Rome. The chapel is located one mile east of Champion. For directions or more information, visit shrineofourladyofgoodhelp.com or call shrine volunteer Karen Tipps at 920-866-2571.

PGA Championship may cause congestion

KOHLER -- Interstate 43 and other major highways in eastern Wisconsin will be even busier next week when golf fans travel to Whistling Straits, near Kohler, for the 2010 PGA Championship Aug. 9-15.
Due to the expected increase in traffic during the PGA Championship, the Wisconsin State Patrol is teaming up with the Sheboygan County Sheriff's Department to control traffic during the event.
"I-43 commuters and other drivers must be ready for more vehicles on the highway during the PGA Championship," says Lt.

Scorcio of the State Patrol Northeast Region Headquarters in Fond du Lac. "Working with local law enforcement agencies, the highway department, and community leaders, we have developed comprehensive plans to move traffic to and from the golf course safely and efficiently. However, drivers on I-43 and other roadways in the area must be exceptionally patient, cautious and alert because traffic conditions may change rapidly during the PGA Championship."
PGA Championship events at Whistling Straits begin with practice rounds on Monday, Aug. 9, to Weds., Aug. 11. Competition starts on Thursday, Aug. 12, and the final rounds are scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 15.

All's well that ends well

Last month we reported on the sad story of a snafu that prevented an Oconto Falls man from winning a Harley-Davidson for a hole-in-one he got while golfing to raise money for childhood diabetes during the 9th Annual Appel Open at Hickory Hill Golf Course.
The snafu involved the distance of Waling's holie-in-one. He got it on the 12th hole, which is 155 yards.Insurer Hole-In-One Insurance Company determined thehole did not meet its 185-yard minimum.
Rich Appel, founder with his wife, Michelle, of the annual fund raiser, reports the snag has been worked out and Jeff Walling will receive his Harley.
"It was kind of a combination of several different groups and individuals who came through and supported us and helped us out,"Appel said. "Theinsurance company came through and made a generous donation in-kind. They wanted to help us out and we very much appreciate their goodwill effort.Harley-Davidson of Appleton also came through and assisted. And the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Outreach assisted, not from reserach funds."
After that high note,Appel saidhis family is committed to one more golf fund raiser.
"We're going to be doing one more, our final one, 10th anniversary. We're going to go out with a bang."
