Members of the Calumet County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3153 celebrated 75 years of history last Thursday. V.F.W. Post 3153 received a commemorative proclamation from the National V.F.W. headquarters, delivered by State Commander Wildred Johnson. Assemblyman Al Ott presented Post 3153 with a plaque on behalf of Governor Jim Doyle. Chilton Mayor Tom Reinl and Vice Chairman of the Calumet County Board Alice Connors also recognized the post’s accomplishments with commemorative proclamations of their own. The post’s commander, Jerry Ott, welcomed members and their families and thanked all the servicemen who fought to protect our country. Ott also acknowledged the service of the post’s Ladies Auxiliary, who work at various events throughout the county to honor the members of the armed forces. The post’s Senior Vice Commander Donald Kampfer served as the emcee for the evening and also created a commemorative compilation of articles recognizing the history of Post 3153. According to Kampfer’s research, thirty-two veterans from the area met in December of 1934 to create a new chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Calumet County. On December 12, 1934, a charter was presented at the Chilton Eagles Hall. Fred Aebischer served as the post’s first commander. The original thirty-two members included Henry Baltz, John Pfluger, Louis Schweitzer, Frank Brocker, William Diedrich, John Steffen, John Hanley, Ray Jensen, Julius Radloff, Max Gohre, Frank Rank, Hiram Petty, Oscar Kossman, Wilbur Winch, Patrick Cole, Fred Aebischer, Aurthur Phillips, Arthur Keuler, Phil Ortleib, Charles Berrens, Paul Spletter, John Brocker, William Janty, Ralph Moore, Victor Everix, Ebon Phillips, Norman Pfeffer, Louis Brandel, Ralph Hawley, Joseph Goos and Lester Hipke. Kampfer also noted the work of local veterans throughout the community over the past 75 years. One of the post’s largest financial contributions came in 2000 when members donated $10,000 towards the construction of a concession stand near the band shell at Hobart Park. Post 3153 also has a memorial in Klinkner Park that reads, “All gave some... Some gave all” and honors all veterans who have served their country. The monument was erected in 1967, Kampfer wrote, and was refurbished in 2008. Over the years, members of the post have contributed to other projects including a monument and Hillside Cemetery, the Calumet County Fair Association’s grandstand, the Morrissey Park playground, and the Hilbert Village Park. The group also put up flag poles at Hobart Park and the Chilton Nursing Home. Kampfer also noted the commanders who have served the most terms. Gerald Ludwig led the post for nine years. James Weber led for seven years, Alphonse Buechel led for six terms and Bernie Geiser led for five terms. Gordy Lakin, Gerald Mueller, Floyd Ammerman, Jim Mueller and John Heimermann all have served for three terms. Three commanders have served twice. |
