Area residents had an opportunity to tour Calumet Medical Center’s newly remodeled Breast Center and learn first hand about the recently installed digital mammography equipment on Tuesday, Jan. 12. Dr. Rudolph Lin, radiologist and mammography specialist and Tamara Strauss, a radiology technologist and mammographer were on hand to explain the new system. Independent studies show that the Lorad Selenia Full Field Digital Mammography System produces the lowest dose of radiation and best image quality of all digital mammography systems on the market. “The image is clearer, may be enhanced as well as manipulated,” pointed out Lin as he compared the digital image to a film mammogram. “Less radiation is delivered and the system is particularly effective in screening women who are under age 50, pre or perimenopausal or have dense breast tissue.” Strauss emphasized, “I can immediately see if the image has good quality. Patients spend much less time here for a screening.” A renovation of the Calumet Medical Center Breast Center came with the installation of the equipment. A community based focus group was gathered to obtain thoughts and ideas on planning the appearance of the center. A desire for a relaxing environment emerged from the group and ultimately resulted in the design of an attractive natural and serene setting. The pale yellow and sage décor of the waiting area and the cabinetry and pottery in the exam room exude a spa like atmosphere. The center also includes a private changing area and bathroom. Visitors were given the opportunity to learn about additional Calumet Medical Center services for women. Breast cancer services included information on ultrasound guided needle biopsy, oncology, MammoSite® radiation therapy system, and van transportation. Informative displays staffed by Calumet Medical Center employees were available and highlighted services in rehabilitation, cardiac care, diabetic care, sleep lab, bone density scanning, and CARES Cancer Awareness, Resources, Education & Support group.
