County committee reviews subdivision, wind ordinances PDF Print E-mail

    The Calumet County Planning and Zoning Department is still in the midst of reviewing the land subdivision ordinance.

    The subdivision ordinance guides how land plots can be divided based on how the properties are zoned. It has not be updated since 1969.

    Dena Mleziva, the Calumet County Planner, said several changes have been made since the planning department first introduced the updated plan a few months ago.

    Mleziva said a new term, “original tract” was added to clarify how properties would be calculated for subdivision. The new plan allows land owners to combine contiguous lots when calculating how many new lots can be created. Additionally, “flag” lots will be allowed on local roads, but not on county or state roads.

    The committee held a public hearing and several county administrators and their staff gave additional input on the changes. Several suggestions about different definitions were made, as well as requests to clarify certain rules.

    Mleziva said the department also received a number of electronic comments and would review these before making changes.

    The committee also reviewed the moratorium on wind farms currently in place in the county.

    The committee is working to add the conditional use permit language to the Chapter 79 ordinance. This would allow the department to review proposed wind farms on a case by case basis. Additionally, Planning Department Director Julie Heuvelman said the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin would be setting up a committee to gain input on statewide regulations. The PSC will be creating guidelines for wind farms in the state, however, rules for small wind farms and turbines for personal use might still be handled local municipalities.
