Calumet County is considering the construction of a new highway facility and is inviting the public to tour the current facility. Open House dates and times are: Thurs., Feb. 25, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.; 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.; 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, March 6, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Tours will be provided and county staff will be on hand to answer questions. The current main facility located at 241 E. Chestnut St. in Chilton was constructed in 1936 and has undergone two additions and many alterations throughout the years. According to the county highway commissioner Mike Ottery and the county administrator Jay Shambeau, the sheer size of today’s modern highway equipment and the operation’s maintenance needs have changed significantly in the last 74 years. The facility no longer adequately meets the needs of the highway operations. Together with numerous handicap accessible and health and safety concerns, a 2009 pre-architectural study has recommended the construction of a new facility. A copy of the pre-architectural study and additional information regarding the facility can be found by visiting the Calumet County website.
