Ledge View Nature Center is on track to install a new solar panel system this spring, provided the final amount of funding can be acquired soon. “We hope to break ground in mid-April,” Ron Zahringer, Naturalist at Ledge View said. Currently, the Friends of Ledge View Nature Center have raised $34,740 for project. The total cost to install the system with one panel is $37,000. Zahringer said a second panel is a possibility, however, no plans have been set for that yet. Ledge View received a $2,000 grant from the Wisconsin Public Service Foundation on Tuesday, February 2, 2010. “The grant came from our foundation,” WPS representative Bob Hernke said. “The foundation was started in the 1960’s and doesn’t come from customer money.” Other major funding came from Wisconsin’s Focus on Energy foundation, which helps businesses and organizations meet their renewable energy needs. Burch said over $19,000 was provided by Focus On Energy. The solar panel system will save the nature center about ten to 20 percent on its electricity costs. The panel will rotate with the sun throughout the day and will tilt as the seasons change and the angle of the sun changes. |
