Marcella Teresa Michels, age 87, of Chilton, died on Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011. She was born April 15, 1924, in the Town of Eaton, daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Stauber) Kautzer.
She married John G. Michels on June 19, 1945, at St. Gregory Catholic Church in St. Nazianz; he preceded her in death on July 7, 1988. During her life, Marcella worked at the Calumet Memorial Hospital and Larson's Cleaners in Chilton. For a time, Marcella also made custom draperies for those who wished to have a touch of elegance in their home. She was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church, formerly St. Augustine Parish, the Catholic Knights, Eagles Auxiliary, and the American Legion Auxiliary where she served as president, chaplain, and was affectionately named the "Poppy Queen." Marcella enjoyed planting her garden every year just so she could tend to her crop and watch her plants grow. She liked to be out and about, just so she could be around people. Whether she was selling poppies, ringing the bell at Christmas time, or enjoying a meal with family or friends, Marcella made sure she never missed out on anything. She loved life, loved being with family, and longed for the days of her youth on the farm; always talking about raising sheep or cattle again. She will be greatly missed by those who were fortunate enough to have known such a sweet and friendly person. Survivors include her children: John J. (Gladys) Michels of Chilton, Mary (Michael) LeFeber of Fond du Lac, Linda (Ken) Koffarnus of Green Lake, Donna (Lyle) Vander Wyst of Sheboygan; eight grandchildren: Crystal (Andy) Schumacher, Noelle Michels, Lisa LeFeber, Scott (Kirsten) Koffarnus, Kristin (Jason) Gibson, Alicia Vander Wyst, Alison (Joel) Hendrikse, Logan Vander Wyst; and a soon-to-be-born great-grandchild whose arrival in October was much anticipated by Marcella. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Mary Kautzer; and her husband, John G. Michels. Funeral service was 12 noon on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church (54 E. Main St.) in Chilton with the Rev. Bob Kollath officiating. Burial followed in the St. Augustine Catholic Cemetery. Friends called at the church from 10-11:45 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011.
