YOU MUST STOP!!!!!!!!!!  That is the law.  If you don't stop, the fine is $175.30 and four points.

What am I talking about and referring to?  I am referring to State Law 346.24.  The other day, not only myself, but the pedestrian crossing the street were almost hit by another vehicle.  That was a close one.  That is what prompted me to write about this. At various crosswalks, not only in the City of Chilton, but also in other municipalities are signs which have been put there to make motorists aware of the law.

City Police Chief Larry Seipel explained those signs are educational.  They are for the purpose to expose to drivers that they need to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalks.
That means if a pedestrian has stepped off the curb and is in the crosswalk on the road, all approaching traffic from both directions must stop and let the pedestrian cross the walk in front of them.  Once a motorist has stopped and another driver behind him goes around him, the driver that went around is in violation of the law.  At controlled intersections, where there are stop and go lights, the pedestrians must follow the ok to walk lights at that intersection.
