The Calumet County Farm Bureau is promoting Wisconsin Farm Bureau – Ag in the Classroom essay contest for fourth and fifth grade students.
The essay is titled “The machines that make Wisconsin agriculture work.” Students will be able to explore the history of farm machinery in Wisconsin; the importance machines and equipment have had in the advancement of agriculture and food production; machinery companies and inventors from Wisconsin; bio-fuel and energy production and usage; the machines used to process food (i.e. cheese making, fluid milk production); or any other angle relating to agricultural machinery. The contest is sponsored by the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation, Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board and We Energies. Last year more than 750 students from around the state participated in the essay contest. Contest information, rules, lesson plans, resources, and sample activities are located on the Ag in the Classroom website at www.wisagclassroom.org, or contact Calumet County Ag in the Classroom Coordinator Kathy Schmidt at 920-766-0241 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The essays must be between 100 to 300 words in length and are judged on content, grammar, spelling and neatness. Nine Farm Bureau district winners will be chosen by April 25 and a state winner will be selected in May. Each district winner will receive a classroom presentation and victory party in May for their entire class (or homeroom). The state winner will receive a special award. Any youth belonging to 4-H, Scouts, or any other Calumet County youth organization under adult leadership and with an education program, is encouraged to also enter their essay in the Farm Bureau Agricultural Awareness Contest at the 2010 Calumet County Junior Fair. Go to the Calumet County Fair website www.calumetcountyfair.com for a fair handbook and entry form. The Ag in the Classroom is a program to help students K-12 to understand the importance of agriculture. The program is coordinated by the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, with funding from the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Foundation, other agricultural groups, and a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection.
