Children crossing Madison St. on Washington St. in Chilton will be more noticeable soon thanks to a set of pedestrian lights alerting motorists of the intersection. At the City of Chilton’s Public Safety Committee meeting on January 12, Chilton citizen Kate Suttner informed the committee that there have been several near-misses. Suttner said that students have been instructed to cross Madison St. at the traffic lights with the pedestrian signal, but that additional warning for vehicles north of the intersection would be helpful. Chilton Police Chief Larry Seipel said there used to be a crossing guard stationed there until about seven years ago. There are pedestrian lights at the intersection, but they must be turned on manually. Seipel said he got two estimates to install a digital timer on the lights so that they would flash during the day when children would be crossing the street. The timer will be maintained by the police department and will be shut off when school is not in session. The committee recommended that the council approve the installation and last Tuesday, January 19, the city council voted in favor of the move. The timer will be installed by Four Season Electric at a cost of about $230. The work will be paid for from the by the police department. Seipel said the department has a grant coming in 2010 from Wal-Mart that should cover the cost. |
