Building a bridge of intercultural relations was bursting with fun and adventure for Chilton AFS student members this past weekend.
Sharing a weekend with teenagers from other countries is a rich and rewarding experience. It’s a wonderful way to bring more understanding into the world.
High school youth invited AFS students from around the world to spend a weekend in Chilton. AFS students are attending high schools in Wisconsin for a year and are living in Calumet, Sheboygan, Winnebago, Fond du Lac, Dodge, and Marinette counties. In June they will be returning to their countries which include Thailand, Brazil, Germany, Chile, Netherlands, Panama, Italy, and Switzerland. They will remember their fun-filled weekend with their Chilton friends.
Friday night began with introductions, conversations, and foods from Wisconsin. Saturday morning started with a visit to Ledgeview County Park including snowshoeing, and the art of maple syrup making. With much snow on the ground, snowballs and laughter filled the air. Next stop was a horse drawn sleigh ride and bonfire at Rock “K” ranch in Greenleaf. Of course, the ranch had snow and snowballs once again were flying!!! Bowling at Pla-mor Lanes in Chilton ended the day. Lasting friendships around the globe were formed. Sunday morning--it was off to dog sledding at Siberian Outpost in Malone. The Siberians dogs had plenty of energy to glide the AFS students through the woods and back again. With a few right and left turns and maybe a flip or so, made the ride an experience of a life time. The potluck dinner at noon at the Chilton Community Center turned bittersweet. Great company and food filled the room, but it meant the end of a short weekend. It was time to say good bye. Students exchanged phone numbers and facebook connections to continue their friendships. It may have only been a weekend, but the world-wide friendships will last forever.
Each year, AFS welcomes more than 2,500 international high school students to the U.S. Are you interested in learning how you can enjoy an experience of a life time? Contact Chilton AFS, Renee Voskuil at 849-2430 or Chilton High School student advisor, Tim Meyer.
