Chilton Middle School hosted the Eighth Grade Awards and Recognition on Sunday, May 31st.

Middle School Principal Rich Appel began the awards program by stating the fact that today just an eighth grade education isn’t good enough, like it used to be generations ago.

Today, students entering high school have the opportunity to sign the Wisconsin Covenant, which requires students to graduate from high school, maintain a “B” average or higher, complete the classes necessary to prepare them for higher education, be good citizens and be involved in their community, apply for state and federal financial aid in a timely manner, and take the steps to gain admission into a Wisconsin school, either in the UW system, a Wisconsin Technical College, or a Wisconsin private college or university. In return for meeting all of those requirements of the Wisconsin Covenant, upon graduating, students will be recognized as a Wisconsin Covenant Scholar and receive a financial aid package.

The awards and recognition program honored excellence in academics and athletics, as well as other extracurricular activities. Students were recognized for their achievement in the Olympian Conference Academic Bowl, the Wisconsin Math League, the Chess Tournament, Math Counts, Peer Helpers, Accelerated Reader Club, Library Club, cafeteria helpers Special Olympics, Safety Patrol, Perfect Attendance, Honor Roll, President’s Education Awards, forensics, 2008 Academic Excellence in Science, Student Council and athletic awards including boys’ and girls’ basketball, swim team, track, cross country, volleyball and wrestling. Student Council President Austin Mueller introduced the eighth grade class, as they received carnations courtesy of the PTA.
