The People in Your Neighborhood Summer School class, taught by Amy Hanson, visited several businesses this week.
On Tuesday, June 16th, the students traveled to Chilton City Hall. They were introduced to Mayor Reinl who explained his job as Chilton’s mayor to the students. City Clerk Helen Schmidlkofer then provided a tour of the building to the students. The students enjoyed sitting in the council chambers and learning about the people who work for the city. Wednesday, June 17th, found the students walking to State Bank of Chilton. The students watched a mock transaction take place. They learned the banking process for depositing money into a customer’s account and how the tellers retrieve the money from the vault. Stacy Propson and Kathy Doxtator also showed safety deposit boxes and what kinds of materials a person may store in the bank. Dr. Jody Chaussee came to the school library on Thursday, June 18th, to explain chiropractic care to the students. They were very excited to see what Dr. Chaussee does to keep people healthy and fit. Several students were scared at first about spinal realignments, but Dr. Chaussee eased their concerns by explaining how he adjusts a person, why it is important to be adjusted, and how an adjustment can benefit a person over time. Friday, June 19th was a beautiful day for the students to walk to Chilton Upholstery Shop. Located in a very historic building across from the State Bank of Chilton, the students entered a place of wonder. They looked through fabric catalogues, and learned about the different tools and how they’re organized. They toured the basement where they saw how a cushion stuffer worked. The students learned how math and art come together to make appealing pieces of furniture. Dean and Ellen Papendieck helped the students see how something old can be made beautiful once again.
