| New Holstein’s Rowley takes second at state wrestling meet |

The local area lost three wrestlers on the first day of action at the individual state wrestling tournament held in Madison this past weekend. New Holstein’s Tristan Rowley, however, went on to take second place in the Division 2, 135-pound level. Rowley won his first match against Zac Weyer of Balwin-Woodville in a 4-2 decision. He then beat Rudy Chagoya of Tomahawk in a 4-2 decision, but ended up losing a heart breaker to Dustin McKinney of Unity by an 8-2 decision.In other match-ups, three wrestlers bowed out after their first match. Chilton's Ross Groeschl, in his second straight appearance at state lost in the first round of his 215 pound bracket to Frank Dobbs of Melrose-Mindoro/Gale-Ettrick. The first period of the match went scoreless. Groeschl opened the second period in the down position, and scored a point on a quick escape. But Dobbs attacked immediately scoring a takedown followed by a three point near fall, which put Groeschl at a 5-1 disadvantage heading into the final period. Groeschl tried to get Dobbs to his back in that final two minutes, but had no success and Dobbs ended up winning the match 13-4. Groeschl ended a fantastic senior season with a 34-10 record. New Holstein's Spencer Peterson also lost in the first round of action in a heartbreaking way. Peterson finished his season with a 26-10 record following his loss in the first round of 152 pound D-2 tournament action against Cody Nielsen of Oconto Falls by a score of 8-7. Also out of the first day of competition was Jackson Brice of Brillion. Brice, who finished his season with a 28-11 record, lost by a 10-2 major decision in his 125 pound D-3 match to Nate Duren of Weston/Ithaca. That left three wrestler still in the hunt after the first day of competition. Their results are as follows. In D-3 at 119 pounds, Brillion's Brock Kasten placed sixth in the state. He won his opening round against Don Robinson of Lomira by a 15-4 major decision. In his quarterfinal round Kasten lost ot Devin Malott of Darlington by a score of 5-2. Then in the consolation round Kasten beat Jake Frane of Edgar by a 1-0 decision, but went on to lose the consolation semi-final by a score of 2-1 against Kyle Johnson of Bruce, placing Kasten at sixth in the state. New Holstein's Joey Nelson also placed sixth. Nelson competed in the D-2 championship at 119 pounds. In the first round of action, Nelson beat Zach Skarda of Luxemburg-Casco by a 15-6 major decision. In Nelson's quarterfinal round by lost to Bob Donar of Cuba City by a 6-0 decision. Nelson then won his first round of consolation against Sam Arnott of Tomahawk by a score of 4-3, but lost his next round to Mitch Teeters of Pewaukee by a score of 6-4 in overtime to place sixth. The Huskies David Galarno placed 4th in the state at his D-2 135 pound weight class. Galarno won his first round of wrestling by a 5-0 decision over Jordan Roosa of Mosinee. He then lost his semifinal match against Levi Kuesel of Ellsworth in a 14-9 decision, but won in his wrestle back against Max Loberger of Denmark ina 2:59 pin, and then won his consolation final against Rudy Chagoya in a 2-1 decision to place fourth.
