The third time was a charm for the Brillion Lions, as they came away with a 46-39 victory over the Olympian Conference champion Roncalli Jets, in the WIAA Division 3 regional final game, which took place in Seymour on Saturday March 6th. Brillion was defeated earlier in the season both times they took on Roncalli, which makes this victory all the more sweet. In the match up the Lions led by just one point after the first quarter of action, but were able to stretch their lead to 29-23 at halftime, despite the Jets Travis Klingeisen hitting three huge three-pointers to keep Roncalli in the game. Brillion then had some hot shooting of their own going on, as the Lions Jake Hebbard hit two three-pointers of his own to balloon Brillion's lead to 39-25 by the end of the third quarter. Roncalli came raging back in the final stanza, with an 11-0 run in the fourth quarter of play. This run was sparked by the scoring efforts of Roncalli's Ben Stelzer, who sat out much of the game with foul trouble. Stelzer had nine of the 11 points in that Roncalli run. Brillion did not hit a field goal in the entire fourth quarter, but did ice seven of nine from the free throw line to seal the victory. "I was very proud of how our kids were able to withstand the great run Roncalli made in the fourth quarter." Said coach Pete Kittel following the win. Leading scorers for the Lions on the day were: Eric Kittel with 12, Hebbard with 10, Trevor Krizenesky with seven, Will Jensen with four, and Blake Klessig and Adam Schmitt both with two. The Lions really had a smooth road to the regional final game. They took on Kewaunee in the regional semifinal on Thursday March 4th, winning by a score of 74-51 and beat Sevastopol in the opening round of regional action by a score of 77-35. In the game against the Kewaunee Indians the Lions got off to a great start. In the first period of play, Brillion had six different players scoring, and were led by Ryan Reinke with 10. Eric Kittel picked up right were Reinke left off, scoring eight points in the second quarter of play, and pushing the lead to 25 by halftime. The Lions were able to maintain their lead in the second half and came away with a convincing victory. Also helping Brillion to victory was Jensen who had 11 assists on the night, and Brian Krueger who led the team with nine rebounds. Leading scorers in the game for the Lions were: Reinke and Kittel both with 12 points, Krizenesky with 11, Krueger and Jensen both with nine, Klessig with eight, and Hebbard with seven. In the game against Sevastopol Brillion shot out to an early 25 points first quarter. They led by 41-13 at the half and never really looked back, cruising to a 77-35 win. "Our offense got off to a quick start in the game, then we went on a 24-0 run during the late first and early second quarter, which sealed the win," Brillion coach Pete Kittel said. The Lions were led in scoring on the night by Kittel with 12, Klessig, Krueger, and Justin Zeamer all with nine, Reinke with eight, and Hebbard and James Van Thiel both with six. Van Thiel also pulled down seven rebounds. The Lions have earned a bid to the sectional semifinal set to take place in Menasha on Thursday March 11th against Weyauwega-Fremont.
