The winless Chilton girl's basketball team dropped two more games to Olympian Conference opponents on Jan. 3 and Jan. 6, losing to the Hilbert Wolves 49-29 and the Manitowoc Lutheran Lancers 63-44.
In the latest match for the Tigers, Chilton came out with a first quarter 11-10 lead over the 6-1 Lancers. The Lancers went into halftime with a seven point lead, and in the second half Manitowoc Lutheran took off, outscoring Chilton 36-24. Leah Ness led the Lancers in scoring with 17 points, followed by Brianna Neumeyer with 13 points. Claire Stiefvater for the Tigers matched Ness with 17 points while Cassie Buelow tacked on 10 points and Courtney Koslowski added eight points. Free throw shooting was an Achilles heel for Chilton, hitting only 15 of its 33 attempts. The Lancers made 10 of its 11 attempts. Earlier in the week, on Jan. 3, Chilton faced conference rivals Hilbert, but the Wolves earned a 20-point victory. Against what Chilton head coach Ray Mlada called a "tenacious defense," Chilton managed to score only seven points in the first half, going into halftime with a 30-7 deficit. Hilbert came out strong with lots of energy as the Wolves scored 14 points in the first quarter. Erica Gehl led the Hilbert offense with 13 points on the day. She was followed by Emily Kesler with 10 points and Erin Leffler with eight points. In the second half Chilton's defense picked up and held the Hilbert offense to only 19 points in the second half. Chilton outscored Hilbert 22-19 in the second half, grabbing 12 points in the fourth quarter. Stiefvater led the Tigers with 10 points, going a perfect four-for-four from the free throw line. Buelow followed with seven points as she hit two three-point shots. Renee Schmitz also tacked on four points. The loss puts Chilton at 0-7 on the season. Chilton will look for a win over 5-4 Mishicot on Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m. Hilbert's record now stands at 6-4. The Wolves next game will pit the team against the Roncalli Jets on Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m. The Jets are 7-2 on the year, coming off a loss to the Brillion Lions. |
