The 7-6 Stockbridge girl's basketball team started the week off well, winning against Kohler 51-39 on Jan. 27, but on Jan. 29 the Sheboygan Area Lutheran Crusaders defeated the Indians 58-26.
The first game of the week for Stockbridge featured a low scoring first quarter for the Indians, grabbing only five points against the Blue Bombers. After that first quarter the Indians outscored Kohler in each of the next three quarters. Not only did the offense perform better after the first quarter, but the defense did as well. The Stockbridge defense gave up 12 points in the first and second quarters, but in the third quarter the Indians held the Blue Bombers to a mere four points, which head coach Mike Valentyne credits to the change in defensive tactics. The Indians switched to a man-to-man defense in the second quarter, not allowing Kohler to find open shots as easily. The big, defensive third quarter for Stockbridge led the Indians to take its first lead on the game with four minutes and six seconds remaining in the third quarter. Jeana Campbell grabbed the 27-26 lead for Stockbridge. Campbell finished with four points on the day. Nicole Nadler led the team in scoring with 15 points, missing only one of her nine free throws. McKenna Dupont followed Nadler with 10 points while Miranda Dupont tallied nine points. The leading scorer for Kohler was Alexis Rodriguez with 13 points, six of which came off three-pointers. The latest matchup for Stockbridge also began with a lackluster first quarter, but against the Crusaders of Sheboygan Area Lutheran the Indians' offense was not able to rebound. Ashley Scheele of Sheboygan Area Lutheran put the Crusaders in the driver's seat early, scoring 11 points in the first quarter. Nine of her 11 first quarter points came from behind the three-point arc. Scheele finished with 22 points. Vanessa Gudex followed Scheele with 16 points, hitting four three-pointers. The highest scoring quarter for the Indians was in the third quarter when the team put up 10 points. Nadler again led in scoring for Stockbridge with 10 points followed by Arissa Geiser with six points. The Indians will look to rebound from the loss to Sheboygan Area Lutheran when Stockbridge faces off against the Gibralter Vikings on Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m. |
