Hilbert Wolves Junior, Mitch Lacy, took home the WIAA Division III 1600m run title at Saturday's State Track and Field Championships in La Crosse this past weekend. Lacy broke through the two lead runners with one lap to go. He saw the chance to make his move and he took it, earning himself a state championship. Lacy won the race in a time of 4:32.06. "I saw the opening and knew that would be my only chance," said Lacy, who finished more than a second ahead of second place Cameron's Taylor Spiegel.
"My coach says I have a good, fast last lap," Lacy said. "I wanted to make sure I could use it." And use it he did. Lacy also placed fifth in the 800m run with a time of 1:59.68. Also medaling at the state meet was, from the Hilbert's girl's team, junior Valerie Kasper who placed 6th in the triple jump with a leap of 34'2.5". And junior Lexie Schaffer who placed sixth in the 200m dash in a time of 26.62 seconds. Also competing at the state meet for the Hilbert boys was senior sprinter Adam Sweere. Sweere took eighth place in the 200m dash in a time of 23.70 seconds. Congratulations to Hilbert's state competitors on a job well done!!!! |

Running in a driving rainstorm didn't matter to Lacy. More important was making sure he had a chance to use his finishing kick.
