NEW HOLSTEIN -- U-CAN and The Heart Truth have joined forces to provide the opportunity for adults to train for and enter an upcoming 5K run/walk at no charge.
Nancy Krueger, Wellness Coordinator for the Aging and Disability Resource Center, will lead the training for the 5K.
“At the training I will introduce a simple program that will have anyone ready to walk a 5K in five weeks. We are hoping to encourage people to step out of their comfort zone and try something new. 5Ks can seem daunting, so my goal is to give participants the confidence that completing this milestone is doable,” said Krueger.
The training session will be offered as part of the closing event for the Wellness on the Water program at the New Holstein Aquatic Center on Sunday, July 25, at 2 p.m.
Anyone coming to the Aquatic Center for the 5K training will not be required to pay the pool fees unless they intend to stay and participate in the Wellness on the Water activities or swim.
In addition to the training plan and support, all eligible participants will receive free entry into the Hilbert Cheesehead Run on August 28, and a free “I Wear Red” dry wick t-shirt. A group photo of The Heart Truth“ team will be taken at the 5K event.
Anyone, regardless of age or gender, is invited to participate in the training, however to be eligible for the free race registration and t-shirt, participants must be women between the ages of 30 and 60 who live or work in Calumet County. Men and women not meeting The Heart Truth eligibility requirements will not be turned away and will be able to receive discounted race registration and will have the option to purchase the t-shirts at cost if desired.
“Our goal is to reach 150 women with this opportunity. We want to encourage and support women who have never considered participating in something like this. Everyone can do it, you don’t need to be a runner and 5Ks can be contagious, once you complete one you might just get hooked,” said Krueger.
Interested parties can sign up for the 5K training at the New Holstein Aquatic Center front desk, call the Aquatic Center at 898-1373 or contact Krueger at

Team registration for the event, which opens with an 8 a.m. shotgun start, has begun but there are still an adequate number of team openings.
Registration forms are available at Hickory Hills, Great Midwest Bank, the Chilton City Hall or can be downloaded at the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region website at www.cffoxvalley.org. Follow the link to affiliates, Chilton.
The entry fee for a team is $240 or $60 per person. The fee includes fees for golf greens, a cart, and lunch. Cash prizes will be awarded in three divisions -- men’s, women’s and mixed, as well as a random prize to a foursome.
In addition to the cash prizes this event offers many other prize opportunities for competition on a number of golf holes plus top flight bucket raffles and other prizes.
All of the proceeds from the outing directly benefit the community in the form of grants that are awarded annually to worthy and worthwhile causes that improve the quality of life in the Greater Chilton Area.
Over the past nine years CACF has awarded grants totaling more than $182,000, more than half of which came from golf outing proceeds.
A solid turnout of golfers ensures the success of this important cause but the event can use help in other areas.
Prizes, cash gifts or hole sponsorships are needed as well as a crew of volunteer workers for the day of the event.
If you can help in any way please contact outing chairman Greg Garton at Great Midwest Bank, 920-849-9381.

Matthew Halbach of Hilbert won big while competing at the Special Olympics Wisconsin (SOWI) 2010 State Summer Games in Stevens Point, June 10-12, 2010. The rain showers didn't wash away the smiles on nearly 2,000 Special Olympics athletes' faces when Green Bay Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk kicked off the event with a few words at an indoor dance and autograph session, sponsored by Kwik Trip and Fox Sports Wisconsin, at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Quandt Gym.
Friday morning began with athletics and aquatics competitions, but by mid-morning, the rain clouds returned, forcing cancellations in all sports except swimming. Power lifting, aquatics, and athletics competitions took place on Saturday as scheduled, but soccer players were unable to compete either day due to muddy terrain.
Congratulations to the following athlete: Matthew Halbach of Chilton, who placed third in both the bench press and dead lift and second in the 2-lift combo.
Volunteers dressed in rain ponchos and umbrellas manned games and activities in Victory Village and Partners Park, but the lightning clouds forced them to close around noon. The Wal-Mart Healthy Athletes tent was able to offer a limited number of free on-site health care screenings before the weather forced closing that tent as well.
Athletes from around the state qualified for the State Summer Games according to their recent performances at the local, regional or district tournaments. Beyond sports competition, more than 1,000 law enforcement officers from 170 law enforcement agencies took part in the Law Enforcement Torch Run®. Participants escorted the Flame of Hope™ from all corners of Wisconsin, uniting in Stevens Point to kick off the Summer Games.
Three cheers for Green Bay Packer AJ Hawk, the official spokesperson for Special Olympics Wisconsin. Thank you to Kwik Trip and the Law Enforcement Torch Run®, the Mission Partners of Special Olympics Wisconsin. Special Olympics Wisconsin holds five state tournaments and more than 75 competitions per year, providing year-round sports training and competition opportunities for nearly 10,000 individuals with cognitive disabilities. In Chilton's opening game on Friday night Chilton beat the host North Fondy Lady Orioles 7-5.
Celine Diedrick went the distance as the hard throwing Tiger gave up only two hits (one being a bunt), stuck out 10, and gave up 12 walks.
After three strikeouts in the first inning and a walk, Fondy got one run, but Chilton pulled even with the Orioles as Beth Brandy led off with a single followed by a Diedricks triple.
Diedrick only allows four walks and six strikeouts over the next three innings to quiet the Fondy girls.
Walks by Cheyanne Van Grinsven and a single by Heather Koehler got things rolling on the offensive end for the Chilton girls. Then after two outs Alisa Hoerth had a huge two RBI single to push two runs across the plate in the second inning.
Chilton puts three more on the board in the third inning as Brandt hit a double and Marissa Moehn and Renee Schmitz both singled. This along with walks by Diedrick, Cheyanne Broeckel and Ashley Juckem ignited the rally.
Fondy answered with three of there own in the fifth inning which came on some walks. Chilton stepped in up however and got three strikeouts to end the inning. Leading hitter for Chilton were: Brandt 3-3 including a double, Diedrick 1-1 with triple and 2 walks, Broeckel 1-1 with 2 walks, Moehn 2-2, and Juckem 2-2 with 1 walk.
In Game two of the tournament, Chilton who took pride in their defense all year long, had a meltdown verses De Pere.
Chilton committed three errors in the first inning, which led to them giving up four crucial runs to start the game. After the first inning Chilton only surrendered two runs as they defense came to life. But it was too late.
Chilton only manages one hit, as the duo of De Pere pitcher struckout 12 Chilton batters. Chilton pushed one run across in the sixth inning, but left the bases loaded as De Pere hung on for the 6-2 win.
Cheyanne Broeckel went the distance as she scattered nine hits, four walks, and three strikeouts over six innings.
In game three Chilton upended Beaver Dam. Chilton finishes pool play with a convincing win over Beaver Dam 9-3 as Celine Diedrick pitched six innings giving up only three hits, while walking one and striking out nine batters.
On the offense,Chilton got things started early as a walk to Beth Brandt was followed with a single by Celine Diedrick, and a double by Cheyanne Broeckel to push two runs across in the first inning.
In was the same scenario in the third inning with Brandt and Diedrick, but this time it was Renee Schmitz's turn as she knocked in both runs with a double. Schmitz later scored on two steals and a pass ball to go up 5-1 after three innings.
Chilton put up two more runs in the fifth inning and another two in the sixth with an Alisa Hoerth triple.
Celine Diedrick was 2-4, Cheyanne Van Grinsven was 2-2, Courtney Mallmann was 1-2 including a double, Alisa Hoerth 1-2 triple with a walk, and Danielle Schmitz was 2-3.

In that third place game, Chilton ended its weekend with a loss to Laconia in the North Fond du Lac tournament 9-1 for a fourth place finish overall.
A very talented Laconia pitcher kept Chilton hitters guessing all game as she fanned nine batters and gave up just seven hits in five innings.

Celine Diedrick pitched for Chilton giving up seven hits on including walks.

Football is synonymous with Green Bay and everyone knows who the Green Bay Packers are, and most know who the Green Bay Blizzard are, but very few know who the Green Bay Gladiators are.
The Green Bay Gladiators are a Semi-Pro Football team that is part of the Northern Elite Football League (NEFL) which consists of 12 teams from all across Wisconsin, Minnesota and the U.P.
The NEFL plays outdoor football with NFL rules. The 8-game season runs though the summer months and is followed by the playoffs culminating with a Championship Game. A week later the season commences with an All-Star game and an Awards Banquet.
Two Chilton graduates have been with the Green Bay Gladiators since their inaugural season in 2007, Sean Tackett and Buddy Lisowe. Tackett starts at Left Tackle while Lisowe starts at Left Defensive End. Both players have been perennial All-Stars with Tackett garnering the league's best Offensive Lineman 3 of the last 4 years.
Lisowe and Tackett first played together on the Wisconsin Blaze, a team that folded due to the owner being called to active duty overseas.
This year two more Chilton graduates have joined the Gladiators, Andrew Lisowe and Troy Isajiw. Andrew starts at Left Guard alongside Tackett while Troy is a back-up cornerback.
This past weekend the Gladiators (5-2) traveled up to Norway, MI and clinched their second consecutive playoff berth with a 21-0 victory over the U.P. Arctic Blast (0-7). This weekend the Gladiators travel to Lawrence University's Banta Bowl in Appleton, WI to square off against the Fox Valley Force (6-1) for the Eastern Division Championship.
Three weeks ago the Gladiators handed the Force their only defeat of the season by scoring the go ahead Touchdown with 1:07 remaining to win the defensive struggle 21-18.
The game begins Saturday afternoon at 4:00 pm. For more information please visit the Green Bay Gladiators' website, www.gbgladiators.com
