Generally families bind each of its members in a special way but asteroid families take ‘out there’ and escalate into outer space. You may contemplate asteroids as insignificant blobs of rocks revolving our solar system and that will be an absolute relief but these masses of stones have a captivating genesis which the scientists on Earth are busy deciphering it.
Recently researchers discovered that by observing the size of the asteroids in incorporation to their trajectory around the Sun, they could organize 85 percent of the asteroids in the inner solar system into about six families. Every family detects its ancestry back to a mammoth parent body (a small planet or planetoid) at the inception of the solar system.
In those times the Solar System was an overcrowded place and the parent body commenced getting knocked into with asteroids and moons and planetesimals banging into recently developed planets and each other. The bodies that developed into asteroids were ultimately splintered into innumerable bits and pieces that acclaimed their parent’s inheritance by mostly sticking together in their unconventional orbits, even though they did not constitute a part of the same giant rock orbiting the Sun.
The concept of asteroid families isn’t recent. In 1918, a Japanese researcher named Kiyotsugu Hirayama observed that some asteroids had indistinguishable elements to their orbit. Stanley Dermott, lead author of the Nature Astronomy paper said that Hirayama observed that the orbital constituents of asteroids their eccentricity (the deviation from a circle) and their inclination (which is their tilt to the plane of the solar system) were not haphazard.
